Facebook Launches a New Mobile Ad Service
More than 20 corporate partners have joined with Facebook in introducing a new service that will allow local merchants to offer "deals" to Facebook users. How does "Deals" work? When the consumer checks into the merchants "place" on Facebook, they'll receive offers, discounts and coupons on their mobile device from area restaurants, coffee shops, malls and other businesses. What if you're a local business that is not on Facebook -- or not online? You'd better get started fast.
Of course I've been telling you about the explosive growth in mobile advertising. The U.S. mobile advertising industry is estimated at $800 million today, but some project it will reach 5.1 billion by 2014. There are some great tools available now that allow anyone to start participating in this early stage industry. But the entry of Facebook into the game should really be a heads-up for those pondering if mobile advertising, application development, or business opportunities are something they should investigate. As a marketer, job-seeker, or business owner is this the sign you've been waiting for?
Other major location-based check-in services like Foursquare and Groupon are also working to revolutionize the intersection of social media and mobile technologies. They've already invested millions of dollars of resources to beta test applications, position their companies, and capitalize on the potential revenues. Facebook with its 200 million mobile users may really fast-forward the exposure and adoption of the technologies.
