Retailers Seek Dine-and-Dash for Thanksgiving

Shoppers stream into retailer on Black Friday.

Remember when Thanksgiving deals and shopping started the day AFTER the holiday? Good, because it's just a memory now.

This Thanksgiving, many retailers, including Wal-Mart have moved up the shopping cycle. At the world’s largest, retailer, doors will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving night.

Not to be left behind Sears is opening at 8 p.m. too. And Macy's, Best Buy and Kohl's have also announced they will be open by midnight.

Although some consumers don't like the breaking of tradition, (some fans posted complaints to Wal-Mart's Facebook page) the retailers have made it clear this is the new way. According to Kathy Grannis, spokeswoman at the National Retail Federation, "This is actually something we've seen take off with consumers in recent years." Added Marshall Cohen, chief retail analyst at NPD Group, "last year, stores that extended their hours to open earlier saw an average 22 percent increase in sales."

Will you be breaking from that second plate to head to the mall? As a small business owner, are you joining in the fray? Leave your comments below.
