Walmart Latest Company to Sever Ties With Paula Deen
Paula Deen’s tears on “The Today Show” were apparently not enough to keep her products on the shelves at America’s largest retailer as Walmart announced it is dropping her brand.
According to a Walmart statement, “We are ending our relationship with Paula Deen Enterprises and we will not place new orders beyond those already committed.”
The controversy surrounding her admission to using the N-word continues to swirl. I’m sure we’ll see fewer white folks now coming out of the closet with those admissions, even at the risk of perjury. This certainly seems to be a “teachable moment”.
Walmart.com lists 272 mainly cookware and housewares items carrying the Paula Deen brand. And the big winner could be Rachael Ray. She currently has 111 items on the site and is a distant second. The category of “Indoor Living” has been a sorta bright spot in an otherwise bleak retail picture as cool spring weather hurt sales. It delivered low-single digit same-store sales according to adage.com.
Walmart's move comes in the wake of the Food Network canceling Ms. Deen's cooking show last week, followed this week by Smithfield Foods ending its endorsement deal with her and Caesar's announcing it will rebrand four Paula Deen restaurants at casinos nationwide.
